The thaar is one of the most successful large carnivores on the face of Arr-Kelaan. The thaar resembles a six-legged, furred, monitor-like lizard with a long neck and barbed tail. In addition to a fearsome double row of shark-like, triangular, serrated teeth, the thaar has two exceptionally long (1') fangs which it can extend and retract in the same manner as a rattlesnake.

Combat: Thaar attack with the claws of their front four feet as well as its terrible bite and a brutal slash with its barbed tail. Thaar are incredibly agile, and skillful enough to attack with two claws and a bite on one side and two claws and a tail-lash on the other; it cannot use both its bite and tail-lash against the same opponent. Once every other round, the thaar uses its long fangs to inject a poison which does an additional 2d10 points of damage (save for half-damage). Large thaar gain an additional +1 to claw and tail damage for each hit die above 7.

Habitat/Society: Thaar are intelligent, malicious, and fearless hunters. They are faultless trackers, with senses beyond those of normal creatures. Thaar have exceptional hearing and eyesight, with night vision similar to Elvensight. The thaar can sense not only heat, odor, and vibration, but it can actually see the magical auras of living things and can track the psychic impressions left behind by intelligent living creatures.

Ecology: Thaar are merciless killers and fond of hunting intelligent creatures. A thaar will often reveal itself several days before an attack so that they will have the satisfaction of bringing down an alert and prepared creature. They have been known to stalk ogres and bugbears in their own lairs, and sometimes even prowl the dark streets of Human cities. Their favorite targets, though, are adventurers as they represent the pinnacle of preparedness and combat skills. Exceptionally large, and overly confident, thaar have been known to attack even well-equipped parties merely to initiate a hunt; adventurers hunting the thaar and the thaar hunting the adventurers. Once a hunt has begun, though, the thaar will continue to attack until it kills or is killed.

Thaar have the uncanny ability to mimic Human and Demi-human voices and will often lure victims by imitating the cries of a hurt child, young man, or young woman. Even more horrible, thaar will stalk a home where a recent death has occurred, mimicking the voice of a recently deceased person and calling to the surviving family members to lure them out into the open. When employing its mimicry abilities, a successful save vs. spell is required to detect the false sounds.
